Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect, and how acupuncture works.

What happens during an acupuncture treatment?
A practitioner will take a detailed health history, fully investigate your chief complaint, and provide acupuncture for you. Initial visits may take up to 90 minutes so we can establish a personalized treatment plan that addresses your physical, emotional, and nutritional needs.
What does acupuncture treat?
The National Institutes of Health has determined that acupuncture effectively treats over 40 disease categories, including pain conditions, allergies, digestive issues, gynecological concerns, fertility problems, insomnia, and many others. See our Conditions We Treat page for a fuller list.
How does acupuncture work?
Current theory suggests that acupuncture points are strategic conductors of electromagnetic signals throughout the body. Traditional Chinese medicine describes qi flowing through 12 primary meridians, with specific points allowing the practitioner to access and influence the energy of the organs.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture in general is not painful. The needles are extremely thin (about the width of two human hairs), solid, disposable, and flexible. Most patients experience only brief sensation during insertion.
What can I expect during a session?
Sessions involve pulse reading and a tongue examination to guide treatment. You'll relax for 15–45 minutes with the needles in place. Many patients fall asleep during treatment and feel relaxed or energized afterward.
What about herbal formulas?
The ancient Chinese formulas have been around for thousands of years because they work, and they can be modified to fit your body and your particular ailment. Herbs reinforce acupuncture naturally, without side effects when properly prescribed.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on how chronic the condition is. As a general guide: acute conditions often resolve in 1–2 visits, more recent issues in 3–4 visits, and chronic conditions in 6–12 or more visits.
